I hear this every day in my business:
“We’re attending a function and the invitation says Black Tie Required. The suit that he already owns will work, right? I would just need your help picking out the right black tie.”
And my professional response is always, “Hell no!”
If you and your significant other are invited to a wedding or special event where the invitation specifically mentions “Black Tie,“ it is customary, polite and most appropriate to honor the request and appear in the most formal attire, especially for the men to present themselves in a fresh, crisp tuxedo.
Those hosting the event expect that all men wear tuxedos as a formality to match the aura and atmosphere that the attendees will be experiencing. Women typically dress appropriately in finely crafted cocktail attire or gala length gowns, always looking beautiful. When men step up the quality and fashion of their presentation with a tuxedo, to match the stunning jewel on their arm, the positive compliments will abound from looking so handsome…it will be mind-blowing.
Every woman loves to see her man dressed to the nines. Take my advice – to take shortcuts is an embarrassment to yourself, your date and to the hosts and is disrespectful. Don’t be that guy to tone down the event with sub-par button-down attempts. You only get once chance to make a first impression, so make it a good one!
